Aug 31 - ‘Kick-Ass 2′ Officially Gets The Green Light
Aug 31, 2010 • Category: Kick-Ass0 Comments

It was inevitable that Matthew Vaughn’s big-screen version of the John Romita Jr. and Mark Millar comic “Kick-Ass” would get the green light for a sequel. Today it’s been confirmed apparently by Millar himself on a radio station in the UK who claimed that due to the wonderful DVD sales the sequel is a go.

It’s not really a surprise when you think about it. Sure, it didn’t perform incredibly well like people thought it would in the box office, but it seemed destined to be one of those comic book flicks that would find it’s audience on home video. Since this is all up and running, now it’s a matter of the studio bringing back Vaughn and the cast to the new project.

At the moment Matthew Vaughn is in the middle of filming “X-Men: First Class” for 20th Century Fox which acts as a ’60s set prequel, out in theaters on June 3rd, 2011. “Kick-Ass” star Aaron Johnson will be appearing next in Sam Taylor-Wood directed film “Nowhere Boy”. Chloe Moretz is in the middle of filming her role in Martin Scorsese’s “Hugo Cabret” and will be seen in Matt Reeves’ “Let Me In” this October 8th.

Aug 15 - Kick-Ass DVD and Blu-ray Dominates Home Video Charts
Aug 15, 2010 • Category: Kick-Ass0 Comments

The Matthew Vaughn film Kick-Ass certainly took some names and lived up to its title on the home video charts, debuting in the top spot on the DVD sales, rentals and Blu-ray sales charts in its first week on the shelves, the week ending August 8.

The superhero film had some stiff competition in the Fox children’s film Diary of a Wimpy Kid, which came in second on the DVD sales and rental charts. It was said that Diary of a Wimpy Kid came in a close second in DVD sales, taking in 88% of the DVD sales that Kick-Ass ammassed. Both films finished 1-2 on both the DVD sales and rental charts, with last week’s winner, Clash of the Titans, taking third place in DVD sales and rentals. The only other notable new release on the charts was The Ghost Writer, which took fourth place on the DVD sales charts and sixth place in rentals.

Kick-Ass completed the sweep with a win on the Blu-ray sales charts, with a record-tying 49% of units sold in the BD format, matching Avatar’s first-week ratio from back in April. Clash of the Titans came in second place on the BD sales charts with Diary of a Wimpy Kid finishing in third place.

Aug 05 - Redblog interview with Aaron
Aug 5, 2010 • Category: Interviews, Kick-Ass0 Comments

Despite all its provocative style and violent energy, Kick-Ass wouldn’t work if viewers didn’t connect with the high school nerd at its center: Dave Lizewski, the film’s teen hero wannabe.

Luckily, Dave is perfectly played by 19-year-old British actor Aaron Johnson. Unknown for the most part to American audiences, the talented Johnson can be seen playing a dream teen in Angus, Thongs and Perfect Snoggings (available in the redboxes). And this fall he’ll play young John Lennon in the biopic Nowhere Boy.

I sat down with Johnson last spring to talk about Kick-Ass and its controversial violence and language, about being typecast as an American nerd, and why he’d rather see kids wielding swords than appearing in beauty pageants.

On Playing Dave/Kick-Ass as a Teen Loser
Aaron Johnson: The script was this sort of teenage angst story about being stuck in this high school—it was all Superbad-esque. There’s a reason why the filmmakers wanted to have a younger cast: These characters are kids in high school. My character doesn’t have a girlfriend, and he’s going from a boy to a young man, going through that part of his life where he wants to do something different, go on a journey. He gives up his old boring life and wants to be this heroic guy, but he’s still weedy Dave Lizewski under the mask. So when he says these heroic things that he’s read in comic books they sound kinda stupid and pathetic. I was up for that–everyone can relate to it. He’s forever getting beaten up and people feel a sort of sympathy for him.

Aug 02 - ‘Kick-Ass 2′ spoilers: Hit Girl vs. Red Mist
Aug 2, 2010 • Category: Kick-Ass0 Comments

HollywoodNews.com: Despite sputtering at the domestic box office with $48.1 million, a sequel to Lionsgate’s cult action film “Kick-Ass” looks to be a reality.

Franchise creator Mark Millar talked about the sequel, “Kick-Ass 2: Balls to the Wall,” with Movieweb. Digital Spy was reading the piece.

“We left things off with [Hit Girl] being adopted by this extremely nice man. He is a cop. And she has to stop killing people,” said Millar.

“She is going to be like Clint Eastwood in ‘Unforgiven,’ where she hasn’t picked up a gun in years.”

“[Red Mist] is a guy who has had his entire family killed by Hit Girl. He heads off and develops his martial arts skills. He learns how to become a better villain,” he added.

“He is going to come back and wreck unholy vengeance on our team. But in reality, he just comes back and gets stoned, and he spends a lot of money. He can’t do anything, so he hires this bad ass girl from Russia, she comes into the story, and her plan is to kill Hit Girl.

“Red Mist becomes like Charles Manson. He goes online and influences a bunch of young villains to go against Kick-Ass and Hit Girl.’”

“Kick-Ass 2” is to be directed by the first installment’s helmer, Matthew Vaughn and slated for release in 2012. However, first Vaughn is busying himself with the comic-book prequel “X-Men: First Class” for Fox.
